Customs brokers may be employed or associated with freight forwarders, independent enterprises or shipping lines, importers, exporters, trade authorities and customs brokerage firms.

Customs brokers prepare and submit documentation to notify or obtain permission from Customs for the release of goods. Many customs brokers specialize in certain goods, such as clothing, perishable products or crew clearance and manifest of large cargo ships.
